The role of Lutein & Zeaxanthin
Everyone wishes to enjoy an excellent vision throughout their lifetime. Routine eye checkups and a diet rich in carotenoids are important for healthy eyes. Carotenoids are pigments that give vibrant red, orange, yellow and green colors to fruits and vegetables.
The macula is the pigmented area in the retina of the human eye. Since Macula has the highest concentration of photoreceptors in the retina; it produces the sharpest vision. Free Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso Zeaxanthin concentrations are more in Macula and hence they are known as Macular Pigments.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are generally fat-soluble carotenoids that function as anti-oxidants protecting cells from free radicals. About four decades of research establishes that Free Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso Zeaxanthin in macula filters shorter wavelength light ie blue light and prevents age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-Zeaxanthin are the three dietary carotenoids present in “macular pigment”. These three carotenoid pigments are responsible for our ability to perceive colors. The macular pigments selectively filter out image-degrading visible blue light for sharper vision. Lutein is also known as “the eye vitamin”.
